Writing Contest: Do It! Win It!

Click for info about a Teen Writing Contest
Visit Writing about the Future for more info.

  • $100 grand prize
  • publication, plaques, readings, that kind of thing
  • Deadline August 1
  • Grades 9 - 12

Huh?  "By 2050...sea levels could rise as much as 19 inches... What will Florida be like?" Will there BE a Florida?

Will we be living in a Panem kind of world?  Or will we more like Paolo Bacigalupi's Ship BreakerWill we have too much water or not enough? Or just not in the right places? This could be a really interesting essay because Michael Grant in Gone, Marissa Meyer in Cinder, James Dashner in The Maze Runner, heck, Aldous Huxley in Brave New World, all have some very unpleasant but interesting speculation to share with us about what terrors we might be facing.

I've got an inspirational thought! How about writing about something GOOD happening in the future?

Good luck, hope you win.

Weird reading opportunity

Fundza is a mobile reading app established in South Africa to encourage kids to read free stuff on their cell phones. I sampled the first chapter of

and was amazed at how very western it sounded. Very upper class kids, very privileged. Only the place names would have told me that it took place in Africa.  Even more interestingly, the comments were incredibly thoughtful and well written, like careful little essays.  From cell phones? Very impressive.

Jump around the globe for a minute and try it out.

How to get through your assigned Summer Reading!

Don't have any Great Expectations of enjoying that classic you're supposed to wade through? Think about joining our Support Group for Assigned Summer Reading! We'll be meeting Tuesdays at 12:45. Using good cheer gleaned from goodreads, info from wikipedia, and wise advice from various sources, we'll wend our way through whatever classic your school throws at you.

Can't make the 12:45? No problem! I'll start a blog site for each book you enter, and we can complain about it discuss it intelligently there.

So don't think you have to go it alone!  Reading 20 pages a day is a good start, but there are better ways to get more out of your reading and enjoy it too.  Check us out when you get your titles.
