Which do you think is more important? That Ms. Travis just invested 100 banana hours in relabeling and reshelving all the books in the young adult section so it's supereasy to browse in and find great stuff

OR

that Cici just bopped in the door and offered to start up the Anime Club again and bring in a swarm of friends from her Japanese Popular Culture club.

I think they're both pretty darn exciting.

Fantasy? Sci-Fi? Realistic Fiction?

As if in a dream, I had a vision, and the vision said, "Why do adults have labels on their books telling them which books are murder mysteries and which are sci-fi and we teens have ours all thrown together like some kind of confusing and tasteless book stew?"

And so I heard the vision, and when I awakened, I began printing labels: fantasy, sci-fi, realistic fiction, historical fiction, mystery and one other I can't remember, I guess I don't use it much. I'm labeling away and changing the record in the computer so that books will look like this: Hunger Games YA FIC COLLINS Sci-Fi. Eventually I'll move the actual books, so fantasy will be in its own section (if only I could arrange something like a fantasy section where you had to speak "Friend" and press a button for the bookshelves to pop out of a cave like opening -- and for the mysteries a siren would go off, etc.

Please please please if I make any mistakes in my labeling let me know. Because despite rumors, I haven't actually read every book in the library. I'm going by cover blurbs.

Is there an anime club at Gulf Beaches Public Library? No! Everyone seems to be at Borders buying up the bargain manga, checking out the goods at Anime Fix, or downstreaming the latest in the comforts of your own home. And I'm all in favor of those things! But I am offering a room with a view every Friday afternoon. Stop by with a friend. We'd love to see you.

I'm happy to share the following list of The ALA’s Top Ten Most Frequently Challenged Books of 2010, mostly because when I looked at the list, I realized I'd already read half of them and thoroughly enjoyed them!

Reasons: Homosexuality, Religious Viewpoint, Unsuited to Age Group
2. "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" by Sherman Alexie

Whew! What a long list! They left out Really Funny!

planning and running book groups, either for other teens or for younger siblings
planning and running a weekly craft program, for other teens, for tweens, or for younger kids.
helping with our crazy Tuesdays
write, direct and produce short promotional videos about our programs and our library
most importantly, using what you know and what you like to fuel our library's direction for the coming year. Because you and you considerable talents, interests and needs are the reason for our library.
